Bird Watching Interest Group

The GVNC birding group meets at different times in the warmer months throughout the year–more spring and fall. We welcome everyone of all abilities interested in learning more about local birds and their habitat or just want to go for a walk outside. If you don’t have binoculars, then we can loan you a pair for the day – just bring your smile.

We usually meet at local parks or trailheads and spend a few hours trying to locate, identify, and listen for raptors, hummingbirds, warblers, and more…  Occasionally, we will carpool to different places such as Headwaters State Park in Three Forks and the Central Park Pond near Manhattan. A local raptor expert was able to join us a few weeks ago.

Montana has so many species! There have been over 180 species seen in Glen Lake Rotary Park alone. Bozeman has year-round birds such as the Black-capped chickadee that changes his song in the spring and migrant birds that visit such as the colorful Wood Ducks, Bald and Golden Eagles, and bright yellow American Goldfinches. Peregrine Falcons nest here and many birds come for the summer months such as the curlews, prairie songbirds, and the beautiful cinnamon colored Rufous Hummingbird I saw at my feeder last week.

Come join us some morning!
