Kelly Ranch / Sacajawea Inn Dinner
Our next Newcomers Excursion will be on Thursday, June 20th. We will meet up at 1:00 pm to car pool (at the Cenex/Town Pump gas station in Four Corners at the corner of Hwy191/Jackrabbit Road and Huffine). We will meet at the north end of the parking lot in the commuter parking lot. From there we will travel a short distance to the Kelly Ranch on the Gallatin River north of Gallatin Gateway. This historic working cattle ranch was first homesteaded in 1866 and has been fully protected under a conservation easement since 2007.
We will spend several hours at the ranch with owner Kathryn Kelly. She will provide a hay ride tour and presentation about the historic homestead with a time line tracing its history along with photos, and why her family wanted to protect these acres from development and how they did it. You’ll also learn about water rights and agricultural irrigation in the Gallatin Valley.
Come and enjoy the natural beauty of this historical ranch with an intro into the world of ranching, wildlife management, water rights, land stewardship, and conservation easements. The afternoon at the ranch will be followed by a no-host dinner at the Sacajawea Inn in Three Forks. We should return to the cars by about 7 – 7:30 pm. (Yes, you can do the ranch tour and/or dinner without being required to do both.)
Space is limited, sign-up early via the website or email KLiechty@charter.net. You will want to wear long pants because we will be walking it tall grass and sturdy walking or hiking shoes. When I previewed this property, I saw a Red Tail Hawk, an eagle, and heard the Sand Hill Cranes calling to each other – what a treat! Don’t forget your binoculars and your sun hat!
